Why London Is the Best Place to Start Your First European Adventure

Looking back, starting my first European adventure in London was the best decision I could have made. It’s the kind of city that effortlessly blends familiarity with the excitement of iconic streets, landmarks, and neighborhoods, reminding you that you’ve officially made it across the pond and are getting to experience something entirely new.

For most travelers, flights are one of the biggest investments of the trip, and often the most overwhelming to book, so it’s important to choose wisely. When heading to Europe, I recommend an evening departure from the U.S., ideally between 7-9 PM. It gives you the best chance to get some sleep on the flight over, even with all the pent-up excitement, and that sleep is crucial. By leaving in the evening, you’ll land in Europe the following morning, ready to start your day.

Your internal clock is already beginning to adjust. As tempting as it is, skip the “it’ll only be a thirty-minute nap,” instead, this is your time to hit the ground running!

Not only is timing important, but flying to London from most U.S. cities is also relatively shorter than flying to many other major European destinations.

What makes starting in London so ideal is the balance: you begin to acclimate to the time change and the European way of life while still having the comfort of shared language and bits of U.K. culture that are similar to ours.

As you wander through Piccadilly Circus, Bond Street, and Covent Garden, you start to immerse yourself in the rhythm of the city. London has that unmistakable big-city energy with the crowds, iconic landmarks, and centuries of history, but it also surprises you with its slower, softer side. Peaceful parks, charming neighborhoods, and cozy corners create the perfect balance.

Beyond the landmarks, London offers something for every kind of traveler: world-class shopping, West End theatre, museums, vibrant markets, classic pubs, and afternoon tea. It’s the kind of place where you’ll always find something new to experience.

While you’re there, hop on the Tube and learn to navigate the London Underground. It’s one of the best ways to build confidence using public transportation before venturing further across Europe.

The beauty of starting in London isn’t just the city itself, but it’s also the perfect launching point. From here, some of Europe’s most iconic destinations are just a train ride away. Whether you want your next stop to be a day trip within the U.K., visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris or a weekend in Amsterdam experiencing the canals, your next adventure is closer and easier than you think.
